The parents of York hanging victim Kirk Edwards have still not received an official report into his death - and now they have learned that parts of the document could even be with-held from them.

Irene and David Edwards have been waiting more than ten weeks for the results of a Prison Service investigation into the circumstances surrounding their son's death.

Kirk, 17, who had severe learning difficulties and had been jailed for a string of offences, was found hanging in his cell at Wetherby Young Offenders Institution on May 26 and died later in hospital.

The service's internal inquiry was completed in late July, and the Home Office said then that under new regulations which came in earlier this year, the report would be disclosed to next-of-kin.

Now the Edwards, of Lucas Avenue, Clifton, have received a letter from the service's Suicide Awareness Unit apologising for the delay in replying to their "recent letter". But it also stated that it was seeking the views of the coroner on "the extent of disclosure" prior to an inquest.

Mrs Edwards said she was very concerned about the continuing delays and also the possibility that they might now not be able to read all the report.

York MP Hugh Bayley has written to Home Secretary Jack Straw to express his concern about the delays and also query the extent to which disclosure of the report could be delayed or prevented by other bodies.

A Home Office spokeswoman said it had always been a part of the change in regulations that the Coroner would have the right to decide on disclosure prior to his holding of an inquest.

Coroner Jeremy Cave today declined to comment.

A date for the inquest had not yet been decided.
