North Yorkshire Police were today taking part in the search for four prisoners who literally did a bunk from Lindholme Prison, near Doncaster, after making a ladder from their bed frames.

The men escaped from the low- security category C jail after scaling the 17ft perimeter fence and police were alerted in the early hours of yesterday.

Searches were now under way in South Yorkshire and surrounding areas in a bid to recapture the prisoners. Tony Lidgate, of North Yorkshire Police, confirmed they had been notified of the breakout and were among the forces taking part in the manhunt.

"Descriptions of these men have been circulated and our officers have been put on the alert," said Mr Lidgate.

The Prison Service has named the escaped inmates as: Michael Haynes, 24, of Mansfield, Nottinghamshire, who was serving five years for robbery and theft; Roderick McGregor, 23, of Billingham, Cleveland, serving six years for wounding and robbery; Craig Proctor, 23, of Morley, Leeds, serving two years and five months for going equipped; and Lee Christie, 30, of Nottingham, serving 15 months for indecent assault.

The spokeswoman said an investigation was now being made into the escape and it was thought the men might be heading for their home areas.

A South Yorkshire Police spokesman advised the public not to approach them.

"We would never advise anyone to approach any escaped prisoners and we would also advise caution in picking someone up who may be thumbing a lift.

"If you see somebody who you think might be an escapee, contact the police immediately."
