Injury is threatening to wreck rising York Wasps star Jamie Benn's Scottish dream.

SETBACK: Jamie Benn

The Wasps full-back damaged ankle ligaments playing for the East of Pennines in a representative match against West of Pennines a fortnight ago.

It is still causing him problems and Benn has been told his recovery could take either a week or eight weeks, depending on how it responds to treatment.

The worst scenario would end Benn's hopes of making his Scotland debut in their opening Lincoln Triangular Tournament clash with Wales at Glasgow on October 22.

And with their second game of the tournament against Ireland in Dublin just a week later any chance of international honours before the end of the year could be over.

That would be a major disappointment for Benn who believes he has the ability to impress coach Shaun McRae and earn a place in the 17.

He has been up to Glasgow for training with his Scottish team-mates and has fitted in well.

He said: "Shaun McRae's a good coach, the conditioner's spot-on, everything is just right.

"Everybody's made welcome and there are no superstars. If my leg's all right I've got as good a chance of playing as anybody."

Getting into the side will be no easy task though. The bulk of the 30-man squad are Super League players, including the likes of Castleford's Jason Flowers and Warrington's Lee Penny.

Also included is former Heworth starlet Scott Rhodes who has been outstanding in Leeds Rhinos' Alliance side.

For Benn, the Scotland selection could be the last honour he earns as a York Wasps player.

Doncaster Dragons tried to secure his signature, but he still has his sights set on a move to Hull Sharks, regardless of whether their merger plans with Gateshead Thunder get the green light.

Benn explained: "Last Friday they wanted to sign me. My manager spoke to Brian Johnson (Hull chief executive) but he hasn't got back in touch yet.

"They said they are still interested. Even if they went into the Premiership they still want me.

"At that time they were merging with Gateshead but didn't know which team they would want me for - in the Super League with Gateshead or in the Premiership with Hull."

Benn, 22, has not yet ruled out staying at York if the Hull move does not come off, but realistically he is likely to be snapped up elsewhere.

If he does depart he is safe in the knowledge that he ended his York career on the highest possible note, breaking the goals and points in a match records in the 70-8 victory over Oldham on the last day of the season.
