Rail passengers have little to smile about, but motorists do have a reason to celebrate today. The Consumers' Association is launching its own dealership in imported cars.

Cars of the same make and model cost thousands of pounds less on the Continent than they do in Britain. But few people buy abroad because of the travel and bureaucracy involved. The Consumers' Association dealership should make the whole business easier.

And as right-hand drive models are now readily available in Europe, it is likely to be a popular service.

The move will also put pressure on the manufacturers to lower the artificially inflated UK price. If the Consumers' Association experiment is a true success, it will eventually put itself out of business.
