A piece of rugby league history was made in York when Yorkshire County Under-17s became the first British amateur side ever to defeat a touring Australian youth team.

They beat New South Wales Academy 28-26 in a 10-try thriller at Huntington Stadium to finally end the Australians' domination over English sides.

The match was a wonderful advert for the amateur game, played with passion, commitment and skill which belied the age of the players on show.

And the county came close to causing a double upset as their 'B' side was narrowly beaten 12-8 in the first game of the night.

The tourists went into the match on the back of victories against the North and the North West and were once again expected to demonstrate their superiority.

But Yorkshire proved tougher opposition than those who had gone before them, and raced into a 16-0 lead. In the second half New South Wales hit back to reduce the deficit to 22-20 before Martin Pearson's 80-yard interception try under the posts gave Yorkshire breathing space.

There was still time for the Australians to cross the line again but Yorkshire hung on in the final couple of minutes to complete a remarkable achievement.

The only disappointment from a local point of view was the absence of York-area players in the two teams which were dominated by West Yorkshire-based players.

Two of those players, Castleford Tigers' Craig Milnthorpe and Eastmoor's Kevin Brown, were outstanding at second row and scrum-half respectively.

Yorkshire County's York-based chairman, Spen Allison, said: "I am absolutely delighted for the coaches and manager Ken Tinsdale who have done all the hard work, and for the kids who have been training for this for three months. It shows a lot of commitment with all the travelling they've had to do to get to training."

Manger Ken Tinsdale praised York RL and Stadium staff for their efforts on the night, as well as the BARLA youth leagues and clubs for their cooperation. He added: "Every player gave a true and honest 100 per cent. None held back, no quarter was given. We played magnificently. I just hope now that the professional clubs come and watch the county play, and start to sign the young talent available."
