Two North Yorkshire men have received the prestigious British Safety Council Diploma in Safety Management.

Aidan Wood, assistant safety advisor of 2 Signal Regiment in York, and Paul Shaw, human resources and health and safety manager of Severfield-Rowen plc, Thirsk, were among 20 safety professionals presented with their awards at a ceremony at Armourers' Hall, London.

They passed a 450-question exam in order to gain their diploma, and had to study safety law, communications, advanced safety management, occupational health and hygiene and total loss control (risk management).

Sir Neville Purvis, director general of the British Safety Council, said: "Good safety is good business and can save firms hundreds of thousands of pounds. In achieving the Diploma in Safety Management, they have shown a commitment to improving health and safety in the workplace. Proper training for people at all levels of a company is vital, as accidents and illnesses at work cost this country up to £16 billion a year."
