The boxing big time beckons for York's Jamie Warters.

BIG CHANCE: Jamie Warters

The Jorvik Warrior steps into the ring for only the second time this year when he fights on the undercard of the Paul Ingle v Manuel Medina world featherweight championship showdown on November 13.

And in a big boost for Warters, victory at the Hull Arena will mean a long sought after championship belt hovering into view.

Manager Frank Maloney is understood to be lining up Warters to take on the vastly experienced Tony Booth in what will be a an eliminator for the British light-heavyweight title.

It promises to be a real step-up in class for Warters, who looks set to be fighting over ten rounds for the first time in his burgeoning career.

Hull-based Booth, 29, has enjoyed a professional career spanning nearly 80 fights and is currently ranked eighth in the domestic light-heavyweight rankings.

He failed in a bid for the Commonwealth cruiserweight title and only last year took on former European champion Crawford Ashley in a doomed bid for the Leeds-based fighter's British and Commonwealth light-heavyweight titles.

But a super-cool Warters, who has lost just once - and that to a cut - in his nine fight career, remains undaunted by the still-to-be confirmed task in hand.

And nor is Warters, whose last outing saw him make a resounding return to the ring with a first round demolition of London's Kevin Mitchell, troubled by the fact he will be fighting in Booth's backyard.

"He will have a lot of supporters there but so will I so it should make for a really good atmosphere," said Warters.

"It will be a step up for me but it is what I want. I want to be active.

"My training has gone well, I have just completed two weeks really good sparring in Sheffield, and I don't envisage any problems.

"I am just 1lb over the light heavyweight limit now and there is still five weeks to go before the fight."

Warters is also well-acquainted with Booth, who he first saw fight when still a youngster.

"He was fighting in the seniors then," recalls Warters. "I remember watching him although I don't think he will remember me; I was just an eight stone schoolboy then."

The fight will mean massive television exposure for Warters, who has also been training in Leeds alongside trainer Terry O'Neill.

Sky TV will be ringside as Scarborough ace Ingle takes on Medina for the Mexican's International Boxing Federation featherweight crown.

The Hull Arena promotion - dubbed Deliverance by big fight organisers Panix Promotions - will serve as the British undercard to the Lennox Lewis v Evander Holyfield heavyweight rematch in Las Vegas.

Ingle's last outing in April saw him come within a whisker of snatching Prince Naseem Hamed's World Boxing Organisation featherweight crown.

He is currently in training at the Grand Hotel in his hometown.

Hamed challenges Cesar Soto for the Mexican's World Boxing Council belt on October 22.

Tickets for the Ingle v Medina showdown featuring Warters on the undercard can be obtained from Pete Warters on 01904 622298 or from Panix Promotions on 0171 242 2358.

Tickets are priced £25, £30, £50, £75 and £100.
