FLYING THE FLAG: Sonia Hurst, formerly of Copmanthorpe, takes to the water after another triathlon success

Soldier Sonia Hurst did queen and country proud in the International Triathlon Union World Championships in Canada, writes Dave Stanford.

Hurst, 30, formerly of Copmanthorpe and a pupil at Tadcaster Grammar School, representing Great Britain in the championships in Montreal, finished 17th out of 180 competitors.

She also was the third British competitor home in her age group.

Hurst, now serving in the physical and recreational centre with the army at the School of Electrical and Mechanical Engineering in Bordon, Hampshire, finished the 1500m swim in 23min 46sec.

The 40km bike section, covering nine laps of the Gilles Villeneuve grand prix circuit, was completed in 1:06.12 and the 10km run around the 1976 Olympic rowing basin in 43:03.

Her combined time of 2:15.59 was a personal best after nine years competing in triathalons.
