A scathing York City boss Neil Thompson is threatening to swing the axe after watching his misfiring Minstermen go down 1-0 at Swansea's Vetch Field.

DISAPPOINTED: City boss Neil Thompson upset by display

The Welsh side got their revenge for their opening day defeat at Bootham Crescent and would have won by a bigger margin but for the heroics of Bobby Mimms in the York goal.

A furious Thompson bemoaned his side's lack of discipline, bottle, consistency and quality and is preparing a shake-up for tomorrow night's first round Auto Windscreen Shield tie with neighbours Hull City.

"Places have got to be up for grabs now," admitted the City chief. "We just didn't have people out there effecting the game enough.

"It is a lesson learned and let's hope we learn quickly, people have got too.

"We get so far and we get a couple of good results then we take a step back which is the frustrating thing.

"We have got to get that consistency to keep going and to force the issue on teams."

After a solid if unspectacular first-half, City were undone by a whirlwind start to the second period by their hosts.

And while Jason Price's 51st minute goal was all that separated the sides at full-time it was only a mixture of poor finishing and some fine saves by Mimms that prevented City from nursing more than a 1-0 defeat.

"In the first-half we weren't too bad, we competed when the wind was really strong while they were mainly reliant on set-pieces," said Thompson. "But in the second half we got what we deserved. We sat off the game and didn't start at a tempo I would have liked.

"They took the game to us and it could have been more. What disappointed me was that people were not doing the basics; staying with runners, keeping their shape and when we were under pressure we got ragged.

"We have got to have the bottle to pass it and pass it in the right areas but we gave it away far, far too often."

Thompson admitted his side's passing was "shocking".

And he added: "The wind didn't help but they passed it in the second half.

"We passed it for the first ten minutes, that was our best football, but when it doesn't happen we take our foot off the gas and in the second-half when we have the wind we do not use it as we should have.

"We let them dictate the play because we sat off them and if you set that tone it is difficult to get out of it.

"We know we can do it but it is getting it out of people week in, week out; it is that consistency factor."

York's man of the match Mimms conceded City handed Swansea the impetus.

"It was a very disappointing result and performance, especially after coming in at half-time 0-0 and seeing out a gale-force wind," he said.

"But we just never got started in the second-half.

"I think we made it too easy for them through a lack of discipline really."

But Mimms admitted tomorrow night's derby with Hull could not come soon enough, giving City a gilt-edged opportunity to wipe out their Vetch Field nightmare.

"The games come thick and fast at this time of year so we have got a chance to bounce back, although we would rather have the three points, or even a point," he said.
