AND THEY'RE OFF: York Schools runners and their rivals from the East Riding get off to a flying start at Knavesmire

Honours were even when York Schools took on their East Riding counterparts in a cross-country match at Knavesmire, York.

Each won three age group races with York's successes coming in the Junior Girls, Inter/Senior Girls and Year 7 Boys, the latter being a particularly convincing victory.

The match, which featured 128 runners, provided valuable fitness to carry into the North Yorkshire Schools' championships which are to be held next month.

York provided one individual winner, Lara Gibbs of St Peter's, who triumphed in the Junior Girls event.

There were some promising results from newcomers, notably Nicola Lampard and Joanna Feasby in the Year 7 Girls' team and Karen Espiner and Susanna Dale in the older age groups.

Several schools face being turfed out of the York Schools Primary Cup for failing to send in results from the preliminary and first rounds.

The outstanding results must be sent in to Peter Wilmott by the end of this month or risk of being thrown out of the competition.

Basketball

Fulford School have had a sparkling season, winning 13 of their 14 matches.

James Robson, of Year 9 was outstanding, beating 50 points twice. Under 16 player Les Hartland scored 57 points against Sherburn and 51 points against All Saints.

Duo fly the flag

Joseph Rowntree and Manor Schools will be flying the flag for York in the Yorkshire and Humberside Regional Finals of the Daily Telegraph National Schools Netball Championships on Saturday.

The Rowntree Under 19 and Under 16 teams and Manor's Under 16 side will be battling it out at Wolfreton Upper School, Willerby, Hull, determined to get through to the national finals at Roedean School, Sussex, on March 11.

They have already been crown county champions and will be joined at Willerby by North Yorkshire's other successful qualifiers - King James School, Knaresborough (U19), Ashville College (U14) and Stokesley School (U14).

A total of 50,000 girls from nearly 1,200 schools have taken part in the competition.
