School sport: North of England call on Pocklington pair

Sandy Mitchell has been chosen for the Under-18 squad and Matthew Webber for the Under-16s after impressing on their appearances for Yorkshire Schools in their respective age groups.

Both players are currently training and playing with the teams in preparation for the divisional matches which will form the trials for the full England squad.

Their Pocklington colleague Marcus Roach has been named in the Yorkshire Clubs' Under-16 squad.

He will join other members of the squad at regular training sessions, as well as representing Yorkshire in fixtures against other counties throughout the season.

There are representative honours too for a sextet of the school's hockey players.

Helen Stephenson, Louisa Shingler and Sarah Hebden have been selected for the Humberside Under-13 squad, while Hannah Harwood and Marion Henley will be playing for the county at Under-15 level, and Annie Taylor at Under-17.

Queen Margaret's School, Escrick, lacrosse team is going from strength to strength.

The have won the prestigious St George's Open tournament in Edinburgh, where Harrogate Ladies College were runners-up.

Queen Margaret's won all their eight games in the tournament, which included top sides from Scotland and the North of England, scoring 57 goals and conceding just nine.

The under-14 hockey tournament at The Mount School last Saturday had to be abandoned because of bad weather, with snow and hail halting proceedings after only two matches.

It is hoped to be able to rearrange the tournament some time after half-term on a date yet to be decided.

Today: Under 15 final at St John's College.

Tomorrow (February 17): Under 16 final at a venue still to be confirmed.

The Under 13 final was at Bootham School on Monday and the Under 14 final at Oaklands School yesterday.

City boys reach the semi-finals

York City Boys' Under 12s faced Sheffield in the regional cup quarter-finals last Saturday and ran out 3-2 victors.

In the semi-final they will play either Nottingham or Bradford.

The City Boys Under 14s and Under 15s played Harrogate in two cup matches and they had mixed results.

The Under 15s won 2-1 with goals by Graham Law (Tadcaster) and Alex Welburn (Huntington).

The City Boys U14s were very unlucky to lose 5-4 in a very closely contested game.

All four of York's goals were scored by Fulford's A Arthur.

This Saturday the City Boys U14s and U15s are due to play Rotherham at home.
