Head teacher Angela Johnson amd pupils Tilly Dickenson, ten, and Cathy Rooke, 11, scratch their heads over the puzzling sign outside Fishergate School

Is this the end of the road for Fishergate?

There's certainly something fishy going on thanks to a new sign proclaiming "Fulford Road" which indicates the street is having something of an identity crisis.

Schoolchildren have been scratching their heads in wonder since the sign went up a week ago only yards from the one which reads "Fishergate School".

But the council has assured residents and businesses they do not need to change their stationery as it was all a mistake and the sign will be replaced with the correct one.

Angela Johnson, head teacher of Fishergate School, in Fishergate, said: "Our address is Fishergate. I noticed the sign about a week ago and it's incorrect. We're Fishergate and it's Fishergate down to the shops, as far as I know."

"It is a little confusing as the address is Fishergate and the name is Fishergate Primary School but the sign is saying Fulford Road and it's right outside our front door.

"It does put us in a quandary and I would be interested to know what's going on."

Peter Evely, head of highway regulation for City of York Council, said: "It was a mistake. The sign should have been erected further up the road."

He said the point at which Fishergate becomes Fulford Road is level with the Cemetery Road junction.

"There's one for Fishergate to go outside the school and it seems as though someone's got mixed up," said Mr Evely.

But he said he understood why there may have been confusion as the council had been in regular contact with a member of the public who was convinced the street was part of Fulford Road.

He said: "He has been quite vociferous about the fact that the area needs additional name plates and keeps referring to that area as Fulford Road and although our people keep referring to it as Fishergate, I think that's why someone has got confused."
