We were negligent for a matter of seconds when she fell into the water. There was no means of rescue - no lifebelt, rope or ladder, not that these would have saved our pet, but a long pole with a hooked end may have supported her or a child or adult until help arrived.
We would not wish to detract from the beauty of the river, or its surroundings, but perhaps a warning of the sheer drop to the water could be posted at the car park entrance. It may save a life.
We cannot thank York City fire service enough for their prompt attendance and humanity. Our thanks also to the woman who ran to the fire station and the man who comforted my wife.
