ON THE BALL: Karen Russell, St Leonard's Hospice finance and fundraising manager, receives the cheque from Gordon Banks MBE Picture: Steven Bradshaw

Legendary England goalkeeper Gordon Banks MBE kicked off a fundraiser for the Evening Press Hospice 2000 Millennium Appeal in fine style at York racecourse.

The 1966 World Cup winner, regarded as one of the greatest keepers of all time, entertained guests last night with an after-dinner speech at the black-tie event organised by York Sporting Club.

The revellers, made up of local sports enthusiasts, were also tested in a sporting quiz, where spot prizes were up for grabs.

Witty raconteur Don Reid, who has appeared on television shows The Comedians and New Faces, joined Mr Banks at the event and the football anecdotes came thick and fast.

Resident MC for the sporting club David Kendall said: "Gordon was known for his exceptional skill, superb power and anticipation. He had some great stories to tell."

The super saver presented a cheque for £565 to St Leonard's Hospice finance and fundraising manager Karen Russell, made from the previous racecourse sporting function.

The aim of the hospice appeal is to raise £2 million to redevelop the hospice buildings so more people can be cared for.
