Reader's letter

Anthony Day (Letters, March 14) should deal in facts not suppositions. It is a fact that the euro has declined in value by 16 per cent. It is supposition to say mortgage rates would be reduced by three per cent if we joined the euro.

It is not a fact that Britain would hold the presidency of Europe for six months every six years, for with the forthcoming entry of 15 more countries from eastern Europe our presidency would be reduced to six months every 14 years. This would give us less control over our own affairs than if we were aligned to the USA.

It is not a fact that we are too small to be independent of the EU. Norway and Switzerland manage quite well.

It is a fact that we are not a part of Europe geographically. Indeed, our geography, our history and our language means we are closer to the USA and to Australia, New Zealand and Canada than we can ever be to Europe.
