Reader's letter

In the Evening Press (Letters, March 11) Jean Glover says: "There is literally nothing for young people to do," a statement which I must contradict.

The City of York Council funds more than 50 youth groups, 23 of which are run directly by council staff, the remainder by various voluntary groups with council support.

She also says: "We don't even have special places to skateboard." Again this is untrue. We provide three skateboarding areas (two outdoor and one indoor) which are very popular. Two of these have been put in place in the last six months, as has a 'drop-in' shelter, of which two more are planned.

She suggests that a non-alcohol club-type venue might be popular. While one pub in York did work with the council on this recently, it has now ceased and we would be happy to talk to anyone who might wish to work with us. At budget council some extra money was put aside specifically to help us meet the needs of young people, so do get in touch with the leisure department (York 613161).

Ms Glover concludes: "I suppose it would be too much to expect City of York Council to do something?" Well, as you can see, it would not be too much to expect at all. But also we are keen to do more. Young people particularly might wish to get in touch with the York Youth Forum, directly, which the council has set up in the last two years to help guide this area of provision.
