York bowlers have completed a tremendous national double.

The city's Mixed Team won the Egham Trophy at Newark in a nail-biting last end finish.

The success comes just a fortnight after the York Women's Team won the Yetton Trophy.

David Stroughair bowled the winning wood on the very last end and clinched a 79-78 victory against Surrey side Egham.

York started the better and by five ends led 25-15. With the rink of Dot Kennelly, Carol Instone, Paul Mooring and skip Ian Daines beating the rink skipped by Ian Honnor, 7-1.

However, by ten ends Egham had reduced York's lead to just two shots.

The rink for Egham skippered by former England international Wyn Richards opened up a 13-7 lead against Michelle Mooring, Melanie Brooke, Dave Hewick and skipper Mick Parker.

After 15 ends Egham took a 62-56 lead. At this stage York had only one rink in the lead, that of Jeanette Coulson, Joyce Chellin, Gordon Smith and skip David Stroughair at 14-11 against John Cook's four.

Ian Daines' early lead had now been wiped out, seeing his rink drawing 16-16 with Egham's Ian Honnor, and Mick Parker's rink were now trailing 20-11.

The match wasn't over and the York team gritted their teeth and by 18 ends had moved back into a 73-65 lead.

Shirley Stacey, Sue Chilton, Stuart Bryan and skip Iain Boyle were 17-17 with the rink skipped by England international Barry Jenkins. Daines' rink had restored its lead, Stroughair's rink had now opened up a seven shot gap and Mick Parker's rink were closing in on Wyn Richard's lead with the score 16-20.

However, Egham fought back and with the final end being played the score was 78 shots each, leaving the rink of Coulson, Chellin, Smith and skip Stroughair to play the final end.

York held one shot when Smith trailed the jack into a four shot count and things were looking rosy for York. However, Egham's third wood, Peter Smith, then killed the end.

On the replayed end, this time Egham were first to the jack and laid three shots and a measure for four shots.

York's third wood, Gordon Smith, played a running bowl in an attempt to trail the jack into the ditch and just failed, but opened the head up. But Egham still laid three shots.

Stroughair stepped to the mat in deadly silence as all eyes watched. With his first wood, Stroughair bowled the winner, to the cheers of the York supporters.

Egham's skip, John Cook, attempted to draw the winner with his first wood and failed.

Stroughair then delivered his final wood into a covering position and with only one wood left Cook again tried to draw the winner but was too heavy and drifted by and York completed an excellent win.

Earlier in the day York set up their place in the final with a resounding victory over Beccles, from Suffolk, with all four rinks winning.

The game was effectively over after five ends with York leading 37-8.

York powered their way to a 109-60 win to go through to the final against Egham, who had beaten Atherley from Hampshire.
