Seeing the pictures of York's Millennium Bridge taking shape in a Humberside factory will hearten all of us who support this admirable project.

Earlier troubles, when manufacture was switched from an Italian firm to Meldan's at Immingham, are clearly in the past.

Construction is well underway and tonight's photographs give us a first glimpse of what we hope will be a wonderful new York landmark.

River traffic is to be brought to a halt when the 250-ton structure is swung into place across the Ouse later this year.

That promises to be another historic day for our historic city.
