A pupil at an East Yorkshire school was taught a lesson he will never forget after he refused to back down during a classroom confrontation with a teacher.

The 14-year-old pupil at Woldgate School in Pocklington, was unruly during a lesson and was asked to leave the class.

But the boy refused to leave even when his teacher resorted to the ultimate threat - to call the police.

So his bluff was called and officers from the Humberside force went to the school and arrested the pupil.

He was taken to Pocklington police station and held until he was released to "the custody of his mum", said a police spokesman.

Headteacher Jeff Bower said: "It was very low key and it sounds worse than it was.

"I don't think the lad himself intended it to go so far. He was given chances to back down but he chose to push it. He dug himself into a bigger and bigger pit."

Mr Bower said the verbal confrontation with the teacher had been totally out of character for the pupil and he had been "absolutely remorseful" when he returned to the school later that day to apologise.

Mr Bower added: "He has learned his lesson."

The school will not be taking any action against the pupil and police have confirmed he will not face any charge.

A Humberside Police spokeswoman confirmed the pupil, from the Pocklington area, was arrested on Tuesday morning.

She said: "He was asked to leave the school but wouldn't go. He became a bit of a problem so they called the police."
