TOUGH-talking Garry Atkins has promised a York Wasps shake-up in a bid to end the struggling club's dismal run of form.

The Wasps were beaten 70-8 by Doncaster and 26-2 by Keighley during Atkins' absence in America over the Easter break.

But on his return to England this week, the Wasps' caretaker coach has vowed to weed out the players who he claims are not fit to wear the York shirt.

"There's going to be quite a shake-up within the next few weeks because things haven't gone very well over Easter. There is some lethargy in the camp which we need to get rid of," said Atkins.

"Some questions need to be answered. It's the mental toughness which I've been going on about since I started. Perhaps some players have gone beyond that and may be don't want to play for York anymore. If that's the case they shouldn't be here.

"I'm a York lad through and through and I only want people who want to play for York. I want players who are going to be committed and train hard, and the majority of them are, but there are three or four who are not and it's those who I will be looking at dispelling or exchanging.

"If those players haven't got the heart and the passion it upsets supporters because they have paid good money and the last thing they want to see is players who are going through the motions."

Atkins was speaking before he had watched videos of the Doncaster and Keighley games, but was not expecting them to make enjoyable viewing.

He received news of Good Friday's Doncaster drubbing the day after the match and admitted: "I was gobsmacked. I felt we could have won but to me it's not a matter of winning or losing, it's a matter of competing. Obviously they haven't competed and that upsets me more than anything else.

"I understand the first half was very good but they fell away in the second half. Something has gone wrong somewhere and they've thrown the towel in and as professional sportsmen they shouldn't throw the towel in."

On the playing front, Craig Robinson's loan from Keighley has been extended until the end of May so he will be available for Monday's trip to London.

One player who definitely won't figure is Andy Precious who has been banned for three matches and fined £75 for a spear tackle against Leigh on April 16.

Precious and Steve Hill were involved in the tackle on Leigh full-back Stuart Donlan but Hill was found not guilty at the Rugby Football League disciplinary hearing.

Leigh's Chris Causey, who was cited by York for allegedly kicking Mark Cain in the face, was given a one-match ban for careless use of the foot.
