YOUNGSTERS at a York school are making all the right moves - thanks to a project aimed at boosting their self-confidence and self-esteem.
Pupils at Kingsway Junior School, Clifton, have just taken delivery of a new giant outdoor chess set from the three-year support project Feeling Good, which is part of the City of York Working Together For Healthy Young Minds initiative.
Project co-ordinator Barbara Edwards said: "Chess gives the youngsters a real sense of success and achievement. It helps them to feel good about themselves, which is what the project is all about."
The school already has one giant chess set in one of its playgrounds and the game has proved popular with pupils, particularly members of the 50-strong after-school chess club run twice a week by site manager George Hay.
The school has a strong tradition of producing chess players.
At the York and District Schools Chess Championships, held at Archbishop Holgate's School on Saturday, Kingsway School were under-nines champions and runners-up in the under-11 category.
Sam Liddle scooped the under-nines individual title and Tom Anderson was named under-11 individual champ.
