CHRISTIANS across Ryedale are being asked to come together to pray for the farming community.

The Reverend Nick Jones, vicar of St Michael's Church in Malton, will be holding a special service in support of the farming community at 3pm on Rogation Sunday, May 28.

Mr Jones said: "Many farmers are struggling to cope with the effects of the current downturn in farming and agriculture. The crisis is worsening and every sector of the industry has been badly hit, with some farmers coming under particular pressure, not least in Ryedale.

"The Churches Rural Group, which represents the rural concerns of Churches Together in England, has asked both urban and rural congregations to use Rogation Sunday as a day of prayer for the farming community.

"As a result of this, and a request from the Bishop of Selby that I take a particular interest in the plight of the farmers in the Ryedale area at this time, I have arranged the service. All members of the farming community throughout Ryedale are invited together with anyone else from the wider community who would like to join us."

Mr Jones added those wishing to show support for farmers are being encouraged to wear a green ribbon on the day.

Howard Petch, former principal of Bishop Burton College and a rural officer for the Methodist Church will address the congregation.

A United Rogation Day Service will also be taking place at Wintringham on May 28. The service will begin at 3pm at St Peter's Church. Following this the congregation will walk around the park and finish at Place Newton for a short service and refreshments.

The Venerable Richard Seed, Archdeacon of York, will address the congregation.

Rogation Sunday is significant as traditionally the plough was blessed to produce more crops.
