THE construction worker who was seriously injured when he fell 30 feet through a York DIY store roof has been named as 20-year-old Simon Pickering, who comes from Burythorpe, near Malton.

Simon was first taken to York District Hospital after being found yesterday morning, but was later transferred to Leeds General Infirmary by an ambulance with an escort.

He was working on the old B&Q store on Foss Islands Road, which is being turned into an MFI store by Totty Construction.

A Health and Safety Executive spokeswoman said inspectors were continuing their investigations at the site today.

They began examining the scene yesterday and will be taking statements from staff at the site.

The spokeswoman said a full report on the incident was not expected to be ready for about two months.

Mr Pickering lives in a flat above Peter Green's chemist shop in Malton Market Place with his brother, Darren. His parents Dawn and Alan live at Brook House Farm, Burythorpe.

The family moved to Burythorpe while Simon was at secondary school.

Elizabeth Simpson, clerk to Burythorpe Parish Council, said villagers learned of Simon's accident yesterday evening.

Joanna Lewis, of Brook House, Burythorpe, the next-door neighbour of Mr and Mrs Pickering, said: "Simon's mother and father will be very upset."

She said Mrs Pickering worked as a secretary at the Conservative Club in Malton Market Place and had an evening job at the Bay Horse Inn, Main Street, Burythorpe.

Mr and Mrs Pickering were not available for comment this morning.
