Woman victim of attack in own home

A WOMAN was raped by an intruder who broke into her York home in broad daylight, police revealed today.

Detectives believe the rape may have been an opportunist crime committed by a burglar who was disturbed after entering the house.

Police today released the above electronic image of the rapist they urgently want to catch.

And officers warned that although such an attack is rare in York, women should take steps to ensure their safety as the rapist may strike again.

The incident occurred in the Clifton Green area of York on Wednesday afternoon last week.

The woman was alone inside the house, when the man entered through an unlocked door, and subjected her to the horrific ordeal.

He then made off with an amount of cash, leaving the woman physically unhurt, but traumatised. Detective Constable Bryan Redshaw, who is leading the investigation, said: "This was an extremely terrifying experience for this woman, who is now being comforted and supported by her partner."

DC Redshaw said there was no suggestion that the man had carried out such an attack before.

"He seems to be purely and simply an opportunist criminal. It appears he may have stepped beyond the limits of what he might otherwise have done."

DC Redshaw said it was extremely unusual for a burglar who was disturbed during a crime to confront the householder.

"From our experience, burglars who are disturbed in a house normally flee and don't like to be caught on the premises."

Detectives believe that the culprit may let slip details of the crime to people around him, and urge people to come forward with information.

"These people often brag about what they have done, and may talk to friends or their girlfriend about the attack," said DC Redshaw.

DC Redshaw today urged women to take basic precautions when at home, including keeping doors locked when possible.

The man police are hunting in relation to the rape, is described as being in his early to mid-30s, 5ft 8in tall and of proportionate build.

He had short, dark brown hair, and blue eyes.

There was a small scar on the right side of his face and he may have had a pierced ear.
