IN previous centuries, Yorkshire folk fought wars to protect our homeland.

Latterly, the Evening Press and others have run campaigns to demonstrate our fierce loyalty to the broad acres. Anyone who meets a Yorkshireman is soon aware of his pride in his roots.

Yet there are still bureaucrats who are unaware of all this. Unthinkingly, they removed the Y for Yorkshire from East Yorkshire car registration plates.

The good people of the East Riding had not battled so hard to remove the insult of being placed in the ghastly administration area of North Humberside to allow this latest insult. They soon overturned the ruling. Tykes can continue to serve up their devotion to Yorkshire on a plate.
