TURNING the town yellow is the latest colourful way to raise cash for our Hospice 2000 Appeal.

One of York's most popular street performers - Mr Yellow - is giving his wholehearted support to this mellow initiative based on the colour of sunflowers, the symbol of the national hospice movement.

Fundraisers at York's own St Leonard's Hospice want to see a yellow flood across the whole of its area, from Thirsk to Selby and Tadcaster to Pocklington, on Wednesday, June 21.

Any yellow clothing, from a hair ribbon or a pair of socks to a yellow suit, or like Mr Yellow himself a complete yellow outfit and body, will show support for the appeal.

Organisers hope that people will donate generously as they go yellow for the day.

Mime artist Mr Yellow is currently working in Ireland, but is returning to York to encourage everyone to take part in the Wear Yellow Day and will be out and about on June 21.

"Yellow is a very inspirational and happy colour," said Mark Wallis, the alter ego of Mr Yellow, who has worked all over the world giving his special brand of corporate training to many companies, including software giant Microsoft.

St Leonard's hopes many schools and community groups will join in the day and help to collect for the Millennium Appeal.

Fundraising organiser Janet Morley said: "We hope to see yellow everywhere we look on Wear Yellow Day - it's very easy to take part, and will make a real difference to our Millennium Appeal.

"We are delighted that Mr Yellow will come back from Ireland specially to be with us and to add his own distinctive flavour to the day. He has generously donated his time - now we hope everyone will follow his example and give as much as they can spare to enable us to meet our target of £2 million so that we can redevelop the hospice and care for even more local people."

To take part in Wear Yellow Day and for more information call the hospice fundraising centre on 01904-781576.
