Yorkshire experienced their toughest day's cricket in the Championship so far this season but their depleted side were still happy to have Derbyshire on 285 for eight at the close.
Three of the wickets fell to Paul Hutchison, who was drafted in at the last moment to replace the injured Ryan Sidebottom, but the most memorable dismissal belonged to Mirfield-born debutant Gary Ramsden.
At 17 years and 76 days, the right arm seamer became the sixth youngest player to turn out for Yorkshire, and in the second over of his second spell he claimed the prized scalp of Rob Bailey, one of the most experienced batsmen on the county circuit with almost 21,000 first class runs to his name.
It was a wicket for Ramsden to treasure because it came from a ball of perfect length which moved away from Bailey and found the edge of the bat to be caught by wicketkeeper Richard Blakey.
Winning the toss on a cool and blustery day which had several short interruptions for showers, Derbyshire were given a positive start by left-handers Steve Stubbings and Mathew Dowman who knocked up 28 in ten overs before Dowman got a ball from Hutchison which appeared to stop on him and he played it out to short cover where Matthew Wood flung out his right hand.
The tempo increased even further with the appearance of Australian Michael Di Venuto whose first ball he smashed through the covers and with Stubbings also going strong it was a difficult time for Ramsden to come on at 68 for one in 15 overs.
His first delivery to Di Venuto brought an lbw appeal which was stifled when no-ball was signalled and Ramsden was rested after four overs had cost him 20 runs but not before Gavin Hamilton had made his mark at the other end upon replacing Hoggard. Di Venuto drove too casually at Hamilton's third ball which was of a good length and it crashed into his stumps. He had rattled up 57 in nine overs with Stubbings who lasted throughout the morning session but was out for 49 shortly after the interval when he edged Hutchison to be well caught by David Byas at slip.
Matthew Cassar also advanced rapidly with some fine cover drives, only to be denied his half century by checking his drive to give Hutchison a low return catch.
A fiery second spell from Hoggard was rewarded by bowling Karl Krikken before Ramsden enjoyed his moment of glory but Dominic Cork and Simon Lacey put Derbyshire on top with a 70 stand in 25 overs.
Cork became the third Derbyshire batsman to get into the 40s, striking consecutive balls from Hoggard for four and six on the way, but when Darren Lehmann came on with his occasional spin he had Cork caught by Victor Craven at short leg off bat and pad. To his great delight, Lehmann then bowled Lacy for 25 to end yet another innings which had got into bud without ever really blossoming.
