YORKSHIRE seamers Darren Gough and Craig White warmed up for next week's first Test against Zimbabwe by helping to fire out Hampshire for 101 at Headingley today after the visitors had won the toss.

Gough claimed four for 23 and White three for 12 as Hampshire crumbled in 52.3 overs.

Spectators wanting to see Australian leg-spinner Shane Warne in action were forced to wait awhile because Robin Smith decided to bat first.

Instead they saw Darren Gough and White produce some excellent bowling to put the visitors in deep trouble.

Yorkshire sprang a surprise when skipper David Byas decided to promote debutant left-hander Victor Craven to open the innings in the absence through injury of Michael Vaughan.

The 19-year-old Harrogate batsman has played in Yorkshire's last two one-day matches and Byas was sufficiently impressed with his performance against Worcestershire on Sunday to give him the opener's berth.

Yorkshire's injury crisis also worsened today with the news that Chris Silverwood has had to pull out in the middle of the second team Roses match at Crosby with further heel problems and he will be out of action for another two weeks at least.

Earlier in the match, Anthony McGrath also had to withdraw because of stiffness in his knee following keyhole surgery and he, too, will be sidelined for a fortnight.

Although Yorkshire were not wanting the pitch to take spin in view of Warne's presence, they brought in off-spinner James Middlebrook to bring variety to the attack and omitted left-arm paceman Ryan Sidebottom. It was Middlebrook's first senior appearance in two seaons.

There were two familiar figures in the Hampshire side in former Yorkshire fast bowlers Peter Hartley, now the oldest player in county cricket at the age of 40, and Alex Morris, who was out for most of last season with shin splints and was playing in his first match against his native county.

Jason Laney and Giles White took Hampshire to 27 without loss and just when the opening stand was beginning to look threatening, Gough broke it by bowling Laney who got an inside edge into his stumps and Hampshire were 27 for one.

Matthew Hoggard was rested at this stage and replaced by Gavin Hamilton who bowled too wide of off stump at new batsman Will Kendall, allowing him to open his account by running two.

But Kendall was not to survive for long, however, because Gough beat him for pace and had him lbw. Gough, having found a better line now, was looking far more threatening and he greeted Smith with a bouncer which the Hampshire captain did well to avoid.

Gough continued to roar in and he should have had Smith for a duck but Matthew Wood could not stop a thick edge from going through his outstretched hands at third slip with the ball running away for four.

But wickets tumbled regularly throughout the morning and early afternoon as Yorkshire kept the pressure up.

Although they soon lost Byas in replay, fellow opener Craven looked well organised and put on 50 for the second wicket with Richard Blakey before the pair were out in quick succession.
