Mirfield-born Gary Ramsden will become one of the youngest fast bowlers every to turn out for Yorkshire if he is included in the team for tomorrow's PPP healthcare Championship match against Derbyshire at Derby.

Ramsden celebrated his 17th birthday on March 2 and has been given special permission from Huddersfield New College, where he is taking his A levels in sports studies, psychology and biology, to play in the game.

His call-up answers an SOS for fast bowlers because as well as having Darren Gough and Craig White on Test duty, Chris Silverwood remains on the injury list and Paul Hutchison is still remodelling his bowling action with the second team.

Ryan Sidebottom, 12th man in the recent thrashing of Hampshire at Headingley, comes in for Gough, while White is replaced by Richard Harden.

Ramsden is likely to get his chance if the pitch looks like favouring the seamers, in which case he could get the nod over off-spinner James Middlebrook.

Events have moved at a rapid pace for Ramsden since his 17th birthday which arrived the day after it was announced that he was a surprise replacement for Hutchison on Yorkshire's pre-season tour of Australia.

Yorkshire were delighted with his form 'down under' and director of coaching Martyn Moxon had no hesitation in calling him up to help out in the present crisis.

"It was a very big shock - but still a pleasant one - when I found out at the weekend that Yorkshire wanted me in the squad at Derby," said Ramsden.
