NASH Stone collected another five wicket haul as York beat Scarborough by six wickets in an excellent Yorkshire ECB County Premier League game at Clifton Park on Saturday.

Four league matches were abandoned without a ball being bowled and York made the most of the break in the weather.

Harrogate also cashed in by knocking champions Doncaster off the top - despite not utting bat to ball themselves.

Scarborough set York a target of 211-9 which the home side reached with six wickets standing and seven balls to spare.

Scarborough's openers had put on 31 in eight overs when young Australian import Stone made the vital breakthrough as Darren Harland edged the last ball of Stone's first over into the hands of newcomer from York University, Ed Senneck, who took an excellent catch at third slip.

Stone went on to take what is fast becoming his five-wicket-per-game trademark - this time finishing with 5 for 57 in 18 overs.

Senneck showed his all-round ability by taking his first wicket in the Yorkshire League cricket by having Chris Allen (39) stumped by Nigel Durham with Scarborough's score on 125-6 in the 41st over.

But Scarborough' tail was already wagging and their skipper Nick Tubbs was well-satisfied with his side's final total of 211-9 after sixty overs thanks to 48 from Graham Wilson and further valuable contributions of 26 from Neil Fletcher and 18no and 10 from Mark Wells and Rob Harrison respectively.

But York were not fazed by the large target and a third wicket stand of 90 by Marcus Wood (71) and Nick Kay (89no) provided the turning point.

Kay, who had unwittingly run out Wood, also enjoyed an unbeaten half century stand with Ben Quick (22no) that steered York to victory.

It was an excellent game of cricket in which York's fielding was superior to Scarborough's and their batting had not resorted to slogging as they calmly edged closer to a well-earned win.

However, Scarborough were without two of their key players, Australian bowler Brad Wigney and Mark Cowell.

There was a shock in store for the defending champions, Doncaster Town who suffered their first defeat for two seasons at the hands of the league's dark horses, Appleby-Frodingham.

Doncaster's skipper, Simon Widdup must have felt that he had the result in the bag when he scored an unbeaten century, his side's score ending at 156-9 in a match reduced to 45 overs-a-side by the weather.

Andy Ellis claimed 7-45 with his right arm seamers for the Lincolnshire side.

But Appleby-Frodingham's New Zealand player, Tane Topia, had hiss own ideas as the Scunthorpe side reached their target with two balls and four wickets to spare.

Appleby-Frodingham needed 108 to win off 15 overs with six wickets standing, Topia (58no) and Rupert Dransfield (39) putting on 80 in 11 overs to claim a dramatic victory.

That meant that Harrogate, whose match at Hull was washed out, went top with the three points they gained from the abandoned game at the Circle.

Former York skipper, Ian Dews lead the Yorkshire Academy to a five wicket win at Rotherham, who were bowled out for 130 in 57.4 overs.

Dews took five for 35 in 17 overs of off-spin well supported by 4-17 from Chris Brice whose 18.4 overs of left arm spin included 11 maidens.

Oliver Burford was Rotherham's top scorer with 54, Mark Beckett scoring 42no for the Academy.
