YORK'S volunteers are being given the chance to celebrate their achievements - and those of others - in a new project entitled Diversity 2000.

The new York Leisure Office is using the event to focus on communities from across the country, whose determination and hard work have made a real difference.

It is a three-day residential event which will include a showcase of community initiatives, advice, information, workshops and a festival of achievement.

There will also be entertainment in the shape of music, dance, theatre and art, while there will be focus groups exploring issues such as the environment, housing, tackling poverty, cultural diversity and social inclusion.

The event is the first of its kind and is to be held at the University College, Chester, on July 5, 6 and 7.

A limited number of places have been funded by the York Leisure Office and applications are welcome from community volunteers in York who have a genuine interest and enthusiasm in making a difference in the community.

If you want to be part of Diversity 2000, pick up a leaflet and application form at the Leisure Information Point, in York Central Library, or ring 01904 551831.

The closing date for applications is Wednesday, June 7.
