YORK racing driver James Thompson may be ruled out of next weekend's British Touring Car Championship race at Croft, Darlington, after burning his leg during yesterday's DTM race at Oschersleben, Germany.

Thompson, who was making his debut in the series, received treatment after the race for burns caused by a hot exhaust inside the cockpit.

He had started from the back of the field after engine problems in qualifying, and finished outside the points - with double vision and without feeling in his leg.

"Because I'm so tall, the team had to cut a hole in the seat so I could sit in the car," he said.

"That exposed the exhaust and it became a real problem after six or seven laps. I decided to soldier on but it was getting very uncomfortable fom half-distance. I was in lost of trouble and I just hope I will be all right to race at Croft."

German Manuel Reuter won both races for Opel, ahead of former BTCC champion Jo Winkelhock. Britain's Peter Dumbreck finished 11th and fifth to take sixth in the championship.
