DRIED horse dung can be useful for drying clothes, a woman from Dalby, near Terrington, recently discovered while riding across Mongolia for charity.

Marnie Summers, a quality assurance auditor at Malton Bacon Factory, spent six days riding across the country to raise funds for the Guide Dogs for the Blind Association.

But the weather varied from non-stop rain one day to baking hot sun the next.

"When it was wet we had to dry our clothes out in the canteen tent," said 27-year-old Marnie. "A washing line was strung out over the stove which was heated by dried horse dung. It did not smell and there was hardly any smoke."

Marnie travelled in a group of 25 people who first flew to Moscow, before taking a three hour flight to Siberia and finally another three hour flight to Mongolia.

Following a night in a hotel they then spent 12 hours travelling by truck to the first campsite.

The next six days were spent in the saddle, often for up to 12 hours a day, before locating each campsite with its bright yellow tepee-style tents.

"There were times when we really looked forward to reaching those tents," said Marnie.

"One day we had terrible rain for about ten hours and we all got soaked to the skin. There was thunder and lightening and we were on top of a hill. But the next day was a complete contrast with absolutely baking hot sun," she added.

The riders had five horsemen with them and were also accompanied by a cook truck which provided three generous meals a day.

As they rode, people would come out into the villages to stare at the strangers and cheer them on.

"You had to watch the dogs if you went near the houses because they could be very protective," said Marnie.

In total Marnie hopes to raise £2,500 for the Association and, following her Mongolian trip, has a total of £1,300.

Terrington Prep School has held a sponsored swim to help her meet her target and the Polar Ford Company has also made a contribution.

"I am grateful for those who have already pledged some money but any other contributions from companies, organisations or individuals will be welcome," added Marnie.
