HOME advantage and experience played right into Ann Farndale's hands as she collected the York Ladies Amateur Championship title at Kirkbymoorside.

Playing in the silver division of the York Union event the 63-year-old, who plays off a 12 handicap, shot a gross 81 to win well ahead of a clutch of players playing off much lower handicaps.

A little surprised at winning, Farndale could hardly fail after a stunning opening 12 holes in which she dropped only one shot.

"I played the first 11 holes really well and that really gave me something to build on, but it was a very enjoyable round," said Farndale.

"It did not reduce my handicap as it stands, but I am always looking to get better and hopefully soon I will be able to get my handicap down again."

In second place on gross 82 was York's Pam Dearing, playing off nine, whose assault on the title was spoiled by two bad holes.

Third was eight handicapper Carole Simpson, of Heworth, and fourth was York's seven handicapper Caroline Kirk.

The bronze division event was staged at Boothferry Golf Club where York's Judy Clark emerged from a 56-strong field to win with a nett 71 playing off 21.

The winner of the Knaresborough Golf Club Ladies Captain's Day event was Vivien Hare, who received her prize of a handmade tapestry from captain Ann Balsdon.

Hare scored 43 points and pipped Julie Johnstone, on the same score, while third was Sandra Garbutt on 41.

Third place was the reward for Ivor Roy in the club's first division medal, but his impressive round saw his handicap cut from seven to six.
