HAPPY Diamond, the horse at the centre of a controversial defeat at Doncaster last Sunday, turns out again at Newcastle tomorrow in search of deserved compensation.

The Mark Johnston-trained three-year-old was five lengths clear inside the final furlong when his rider Royston Ffrench eased up prematurely, allowing Kim Tinkler on McGillicuddy Reeks to win by half-a-length.

Ffrench, who returned to jeering from angry punters, held up his hands at the subsequent stewards' inquiry and admitted his mistake, which earned him a 14-day ban.

Tomorrow Robert Winston takes the mount on Happy Diamond in the £10,000 West Indies Cricket Carnival Handicap.

Many will regard the horse as a winner without a penalty, but he is hardly that, as the handicapper has reacted to what he felt the result should have been and has raised Happy Diamond 8lb.

Even allowing for that rise, the Middleham horse should take the honours tomorrow - even if it is a week late.

The Sunday Funday Handicap over five furlongs has attracted a a field of 20 and nothing has more appeal than Premium Princess, trained at Settrington near Malton by John Quinn.

The five-year-old, a pleasing third at Nottingham last time, is gradually returning to form. A previous winner over this course-and-distance, she is drawn in stall 1, which promises to prove an advantage if the recent Gosforth park Cup meeting is anything to go by.

At Sandown, the £50,000 Victor Chandler 'Raceday' Showcase Handicap takes pride of place and Caribbean Monarch will be hard to beat.

Sir Michael Stoute's charge fulfilled previous promise when winning last month's Royal Hunt Cup at Royal Ascot. A follow-up is on the cards here with Pat Eddery taking over from the injured Kieren Fallon.

The £20,000 Dragon Stakes has attracted a useful field of juveniles and Misty Eyes has strong claims.

Winner of two of her four races, this speedy filly is enjoying a fine campaign with the rosy prospect that even better is still to come. Lee Newman, as usual, has the mount.

The jumping action comes from Market Rasen where Winter Gale is napped to win the 500/1 Irish Lottery Odds at Liles Handicap Chase.

Mick Easterby's gelding gained an easy win over two miles at Worcester last Saturday. Tomorrow's longer trip is not expected to inconvenience him and a quick double looks on the cards.

Tony Dobbin again has the mount on the Sheriff Hutton raider.
