A TALENTED pupil took the 1960s as his inspiration for an unusual chair he created for a school design and technology project.

It was one of many designs on show at an exhibition of pupils' work from Woldgate School, in Pocklington.

Sam Hill, 15, made his innovative swinging sixties seat from a fibreglass bowl and a simple polyester covering which was reinforced with metal and placed on top of a swivel chair base.

The project took him 50 hours to complete which also included written work.

Sally Richardson, head of design and technology at the school, said: "Sam has produced absolutely outstanding work. It has a 1960s influence, but his idea is very unusual and the workmanship is very good."

The public, parents and governors also gave the thumbs to other designs on show at the school display.

Mrs Richardson said: "The exhibition was very successful. We felt people should see an overview of our department's work so there were exhibits from 11-year-olds right up to sixth formers. People were so impressed with what the pupils had done. One comment in the visitors' book said the standard of work was brilliant."
