I WOULD like to endorse the article 'When it comes to the end of the road' (July 6). It could have been written by myself. About five years ago, approaching 80 years old, I began to feel apprehension when driving (nearly 60 years unblemished) on main roads and motorways. I decided the time had come to stop this driving. By the time I was 85, I packed up altogether and sold the car. It was a cruel blow but I thought it the only sensible action.

I am getting used to going without the car now and am convinced that stricter checks should be made on drivers aged over 70 for the good of mankind.
