NEW Heworth rugby league coach Harold Box could be boosted by the return of hooker Anthony Howcroft for the forthcoming season.

Student international Howcroft did not play for the Villagers last year because of his studies at Nottingham Trent University.

But this year - the third of his degree in estate surveying - will be spent on work placement at a Leeds-based surveying company.

That means he will be free to play for Heworth and is considering a return to training this summer.

However, he will not be available for the start of the season having been selected to tour New Zealand and Australia with Great Britain and Ireland Students in September.

Howcroft's selection came on the back of some impressive displays for England Students in the recent home nations tournament.

He captained the team in their victory over Ireland and scored a try in their win against Scotland.

Although they were beaten by Wales in their final match, England still finished as championship winners.

The England team were managed by former York Wasps Academy coach Tony Gargan, who will also lead the GB squad on their tour to Australia.

His former York Academy colleague Stuart Gunnell will coach another GB Students team which tours America at the same time.

The GB squads are currently trying to raise funds for the trips which could be in doubt if they cannot come up with the cash.

Each player, including Howcroft, must raise £750 each to cover the costs and he is appealing for any firms or individuals who would like to contribute to contact him on 01904 763390 or 07801 850212.
