Former York City fans' favourite Andy McMillan would grab an opportunity to resurrect his love affair with Bootham Crescent.

But despite being surprisingly shown the door by Scottish first division outfit Ayr United, McMillan admits a second stint with the Minstermen is likely to remain a distant dream.

Speaking to the Evening Press, the 31-year-old - second in York City's all-time appearance record - said "I have to say I would jump at the chance to go back to York City.

"It would be a dream come true and everyone knows I did not want to leave.

"You never know, stranger things have happened in football but the way it finished I would think it is 99 per cent sure it will not happen."

McMillan admitted the decision of Ayr boss Gordon Dalziel not to offer him a new deal had left him stunned.

"The manager has just chopped and changed the side all season and has now basically gone back on his word," explained the defender.

"When I signed it was initially until the end of the season but he told me he would sort me out with at least another year, if not two.

"I had brought my whole family up to Scotland and was settled. But because we haven't done that well he has suddenly decided to get rid of all those - I think there is something like ten players - who are out of contract."

However, despite the abrupt end to his Ayr career, McMillan refused to be too downcast.

"That is football and hopefully I will find something. There are a few things in the pipeline and my agent has been talking to a few clubs so we will have to wait and see."

McMillan, who is living just outside the Strathclyde resort, admitted he would love to stay in Scotland after his family had settled well north of the border.

"I have really enjoyed my time in Scotland but my eldest son has just started school and so anything I do now must be in his best interests," he said.

McMillan's Somerset Park exit comes little over a year to the day that he was unexpectedly transfer-listed by then York City manager Neil Thompson.

Only six weeks ago, the one-time City favourite was part of the Ayr side that tackled the mighty Rangers in the Scottish Cup semi-final at packed Hampden Park.

The Honest Men, who finished seventh in the first division, were bidding to reach their first Scottish Cup final in their 90-year history but were walloped 7-0 by the Gers and their fleet of international stars.

However, it is unlikely that City boss Terry Dolan, who has plenty of cover at right back, would be prepared to bring McMillan back to York - and indicated as such at the recent City fans' forum held at Queen Anne's School, York.

Dolan revealed today defender Barry Jones, goalkeeper Alan Fettis and full-back Darren Edmondson are still mulling over contract offers.

Dolan indicated there was no time limit as he awaits their answers and said he was not expecting any formal replies for at least a couple of weeks.

It is understood tentative negotiations have also begun with Bradford City as to the future of Mark Bower but talks have been put on hold with Bantams' manager Paul Jewell now on holiday.
