York City fans will get their first glimpse of Terry Dolan's remodelled Minstermen in tonight's friendly at Harrogate Town (7.45pm).

After fielding a team made up of youngsters, trialists and largely fringe first team player for last night's 1-0 win over Marske United, the City chief is threatening the real deal at Wetherby Road in Alan Smith's Testimonial match.

On show for the first time in City colours will be Dolan's three summer acquisitions; Peter Duffield, Graham Potter and Gary Hobson.

The 18-man squad will be the same that travels to Keele University, City's pre-season training camp, on Sunday.

Joining Dolan's main men will be trialists David McNiven and Phil Hadland, who have earned an extended chance to win a Bootham Crescent contract.

Both figured in last night's North Riding Senior Cup semi-final, with striker McNiven in particular catching the eye by scoring the winning goal with a stunning 35-yard lob.

" I thought David worked very hard and his movement was very good," said coach Adie Shaw.

"He is a very intelligent player, a very busy player and if he can carry on along those lines he could have a longer stay at York City.

"Keele will give us another chance to look at them but, especially with David, the signs are very encouraging.

Dolan's decision to take only an 18-man squad, plus McNiven and Hadland, to Harrogate and then Keele means a number of players with first team experience and aspirations are set to stay at home.

"I said to the lads who played tonight they have got work hard to get in to the first team because we have got to get a settled side very quickly," explained Shaw.

"The 18 who are going to Harrogate and are going to Keele are, at this moment in time, our first team squad."

Shaw said he was satisfied with last night's performance, with both second year trainee Leigh Wood and veteran Wayne Hall, in his first game since an operation on his heel, catching the eye.

Dolan has already indicated Marc Thompson and Chris Fairclough will not make the trip to Staffordshire as they build up their fitness after injury.

Defender Matt Hocking is also not expected to travel to Keele after taking a bang on the head just minutes into last night's second half.

"He seems okay but was a little bit dazed so we will give him a couple of days to recover," explained Shaw.

York City intermediates were in action this afternoon, taking on an American touring side at the club's Wigginton road training complex.

The beneficiary of tonight's game, Harrogate-born Smith has spent 21 years at his home-town club, having originally joined as player-manager from Ossett Albion in 1979.

The 49-year-old has filled a variety of roles at the club, including manager (twice), general manager and more latterly director. He is currently the manager of the club's under-16s team, while still running a trophy shop in the town.

When aged 20, Smith played twice for City as an amateur left-winger, following two impressive displays in the reserves.

Harrogate are likely to again try a few new faces, having played nine debutants, including seven summer signings, in the 3-0 defeat by Barnsley on Tuesday.

Manager Dave Fell is planning to use most of his 22-strong squad at some stage. "However, we created chances against Barnsley and overall I was quite happy. Hopefully we'll see more good stuff tonight."
