Haxby teenager Steven Bricknall's rise in the world of grid iron is set to continue through to the six-team European Junior Championships.

The 19-year-old, who took up American football after starting at Glamorgan University in October, has been selected for the Great Britain Junior squad that flies out to Berlin for the July 30 to August 5 tournament.

As reported by the Evening Press, Bricknall was invited to join the GB youth development side at under-19s level earlier this year after a string of impressive displays for the Cardiff Cobras team, which he joined after moving to university.

The Joseph Rowntree School former pupil, who is 6ft 4ins tall, used to play prop for York Rugby Union Club Colts, who he captained on a tour to Spain and Portugal last summer. He now plays defensive line for the Cobras.

His GB side, who secured their place in the European championship finals by beating Holland 40-0 in a qualifier in May, will open their campaign against hosts and cup holders Germany.

They also face Finland in the group stages aiming to progress to the final, where they will play France, Russia or Italy, who contest the other group.
