GOD'S county has always been famous for its hearty grub and Yorkshire Day will see our capital city awash with it. For York's Newgate Market is playing host to some of the proudest purveyors of Yorkshire fruit, veg, cheese and sausages will be out in force to create a sea of colour which will spill out on to Parliament Street.

The City of York Council - famed for its popular Farmers' Markets - is going one further by bringing together the finest food producers from around the region.

One of them is Andrew Keeble, of Manor Born sausages near Thirsk, who will be launching his 'Yorkshire Ale', using a Black Sheep Brewery brew to give his new bangers an extra kick.

Andrew explained: "I really wanted to get involved with Yorkshire Day because everything we sell is grown or reared right here in Yorkshire.

"And we are very proud of our wholesome ingredients, like using fresh herbs in our sausages.

''But our main Yorkshire Day highlight will be to bring out our special Yorkshire Ale sausages.

"We are also proud of our involvement with local businesses.

''Train firm GNER is starting to take our products from August and even Harvey Nichols in Leeds sells our sausages." John's products are literally going fast, especially with racing legend Eddie Irvine using his sausages to feed his Formula One team.

In the main part of Newgate Market can be found the friendly faces working on Simon Baynes's fruit and veg store.

Simon said: "On Yorkshire Day I will be trying to stock as much Yorkshire produces as possible. It's quite late in the season for strawberries and raspberries but I should be able to get a batch from a man I know in Bishopthorpe.

"I'm a York man born and bred and you can bet me and all my staff will be wearing white roses on the day. We might even be singing 'On Ilkley Moor Bah'tat'.
