Fentons Coffee Lounge, Shambles, York situated at the back of a novelty shop, one of York's latest refreshments venues has recently opened.

It is no more than a snack spot. The word lounge might imply soft seats, ideal for idling away an hour or so. Not so! The furniture is wrought iron and heavy although the seats are comfortable. The tables have filigree tops which means that spillages could end up on unsuspecting legs. During most of our visit we were the only customers. Nothing seemed too much trouble. From cheese, fruit and plain scones, Ann chose the first which with butter cost 95p. The verdict "nice and fresh". She also had hot chocolate with cream (£1.20) . I selected a special offer of toasted cinnamon and raisin loaf with a pot of tea (£1.95). Never have I eaten such a tasty loaf. It came from Via Vecchia, the delicatessen also in the Shambles. My sweet tooth got the better of me. Ignoring the meringues, cakes and biscuits I tried chocolate gateaux (£1.50). The gateaux was not a world beater but I shall certainly be seeking out the cinnamon and raisin loaf again. All in all, an interesting find.
