I WRITE in response to Mr Quarrie's letter (August 3), about the teachers' suspended sentence for slapping a child.
He cannot know or express the feeling of "all right-minded, decent folk". He puts forward a bigoted view and ignores the larger issues.
Many people feel sympathy for the head teacher concerned, but understand that violence by professional adults upon any child in their care cannot be condoned.
Mr Quarrie seems to think the Government is responsible for the judiciary and its interpretation of justice.
This is not so. The judiciary is independent of government and this separation of powers is an important safeguard to our democracy.
