NORTH Yorkshire's tourist trade savoured a Bank Holiday boom over the weekend as visitors poured in to get a taste of the county's array of attractions.

A forecast of unsettled rainy weather had looked set to keep numbers down, but the sun shone enough between the sporadic showers to get people out and about.

York Dungeon did brisk trade at the weekend continuing to buck the trend for a week where visitor numbers normally dip slightly as people head for the Ebor race meet.

Display supervisor Martin Bell said it had been a good weekend for the attraction and while Bank Holiday Monday had started quietly it was expected to be busy.

A spokeswoman for Jorvik Viking Centre said: "It has been a great weekend for us and it's not been hampered by the weather at all."

And despite fears that motorists could face the worst Bank Holiday jams ever, North Yorkshire police reported no major jams or tailbacks on the county's roads.

A spokesman said that while traffic was heavy on the A64 between Malton and York as day-trippers headed back from the coast, there was no serious congestion.

The A1 southbound was snarled up for a time due to a minor accident involving a caravan, he said, but traffic kept moving.

"All in all not too bad for an August Bank Holiday," he added.
