Poppleton will have to be patient in their quest to claim the Tyke Petroleum Men's Tennis League title.

Although Poppleton had an 82-26 win at Bubwith to remain undefeated in division one, and despite their superior games average, they are not yet champions as they have still to play Dunnington and Rowntree Park.

Dunnington beat York I 68-40, Mike Taylor and Kevin Todd notching 26 games, while Rowntree Park beat relegated York II 75-33 with Paul Adams and Martin McConnell (27) starring.

Civil Service beat Riccall, who are also facing the drop into division two next year.

Chris Sorby and Andy Potter scored 25 out of 66.

The race in division two remains open as Knaresborough's top spot is under threat following their defeat at the hands of second place Wigginton by 75-33.

Wigginton, for whom Ian Tooms and Phil Langley scored 27, have two matches in hand and promotion looks certain.

Castlegarth's Richard Brownly and Paul Carter scored 28 in their 57-51 win over Fulford, for whom Tom Baker and Martin Glassett scored 22.

One of these clubs looks likely to join Bishopthorpe in the relgation places.

In the three club struggle at the top of division three, Sherburn beat relegated New Earswick 79-29, Jonathan Sharp and Kevin Brotherton having two 12-0s in their 33.

Appleton Roebuck's 62-46 win over mid-table Castlegarth was well earned with David Bradley and Doug Harrison unbeaten on 26.

Dunnington II eased away from danger, beating higher placed Wheldrake 65-43 led by Mike Jenkins and Andy Lydiatt's 28.

Wilberfoss stuttered again in division four, beaten by Copmanthorpe II, one place beneath them.

With a match in hand, Wilberfoss will still expect to win promotion.

Cliffe lost to Strensall II, one place above them, and slipped into the second relegation spot in a very competitive area.

Strensall's Daniel Pillai and Owen Borger were unbeaten on 25.

Wigginton II crept out of the danger zone scoring 86 against Heworth, whose Mark Winfield conceded 12 after injury.

Andy Walker and Ken Storey were the cutting edge in a very strong Wigginton display, scoring 33 including two 12s.

Cawood clinched promotion by beating bottom club Riccall II, who won only one rubber but did well to score.

Boston Spa beat the only club that can deny them the division five championship title, Knaresborough II, who have three matches in hand.

Boston's Gordon Milne and John Develley scored 27 in the 68-40 success.

Nestl revived their hopes of avoiding the drop beating Selby, both sides having a 12-0 in the 60-48 result.

Appleton Roebuck II retained a slight chance of holding the second promotion place beating Sheriff Hutton, whose position looks very precarious.

With a 65-43 result the scorecard makes strange reading as Sheriff Hutton's Chris Burnham and Kevin Fairclough scored 12, 11 and four, while Appleton's Dennis Farrant and Peter Ziegler scored 0, 11 and 11!

Division six was not without surprises.

Rufforth managed only 62 against mid-table Cawood, 30 from David Laws and Andy Ivel.

Civil Service II clung on to their promotion hopes, beating Bishopthorpe II 84-24.

Bishopthorpe turned out with only two pairs, both regular third teamers.

Albert Ridsdill and John Eland had a 10-2 in their top score.

Meanwhile, Bishopthorpe III conceded the match against New Earswick II, who have conceded twice but now move off the bottom of the league.
