A small East Yorkshire gun club today produced its second Olympic medal for Britain.

East Yorkshire Gun Club member Richard Faulds added a gold medal to the silver won last weekend by another club member, Ian Peel.

Despite not living in Yorkshire, both men have regularly visited the club at Leconfield, near Beverley.

"They are both smashing lads and thoroughly deserve their success," said assistant manager Bob Ferguson. "And what is more, they are both genuine amateur sportsmen who have a real love for shooting.

"That is what the Olympics should be about, not these millionaire tennis players."

According to Mr Ferguson, the club is the only non-profit making shooting club in the country.

All facilities at the club are owned by the members, and every penny made is ploughed back in.

He said: "The fact that we are run on a non-profit making basis makes Ian and Richard's medals even more marvellous. We started off here 30 years ago with nothing, and now our facilities are the best in the world as far as I am concerned- the fact that we have Olympic medal winners shooting here regularly would seem to be evidence of that. Let's just hope we can turn out a few more."

Faulds struck gold in a thrilling men's double trap shoot-out.

The 23-year-old, from Longparish in Hampshire, beat Australia's Russell Mark to win Britain's second gold of the Games.

Faulds, who was lying fourth going into the final round, kept his nerve at the Sydney International Shooting Centre to become Britain's first shooting gold medallist since Malcolm Cooper in 1988.

A jubilant Faulds said: "I thought I had lost it. I cannot believe it. It's a dream come true - somebody smack me!"
