Drugs with a street value of more than £100,000 have been seized in York, police revealed today

Heroin, cocaine and amphetamines were recovered as officers carried out a series of raids across the city at the weekend.

The seizure is believed to be among the biggest ever in the city.

York police's operations chief announced today that more raids and arrests would follow, and asked for the help of the public in identifying other drug-dealers.

Operation Starling started on Friday and saw officers targeting a number of locations on the west side of the city.

Six people - three men and three women - were arrested, and more than 1kg of heroin, in addition to the other drugs, was seized.

Superintendent John Lacy said today: "This is one of the biggest seizures of heroin the city has known.

"The drugs have a value of more than £100,000 and were clearly destined for the streets of York."

Supt Lacy said the arrests resulted from North Yorkshire police's commitment to tackle the scourge of drugs in the city, but added that the amount recovered highlighted the escalating use of heroin and other drugs.

He urged the public to come forward with information - in confidence if necessary - to help the police to continue their crackdown on drugs.

He said intelligence provided by the public was vital in police operations.

"Anyone who has information about the supply of drugs on the city streets can contact Crimestoppers on 0800 555111," he said.

"Undoubtedly similar operations will follow."
