Before the clearing up after the violent storms and worst floods since 1642 can begin, many households will face the unenviable task of counting the cost of the damage to the structure of their home, furniture and possessions.

Of course, some people may choose to meet the cost of minor repairs themselves, particularly if their no claims bonus is at risk, but for those residents who are considering making a claim, City of York Trading Standards offers the following advice:

1. Take photographs or use a video camera to record evidence of the damage the elements have caused to your home.

2. Contact your insurance company without delay - there will probably be an emergency number with your policy details. Check that your policy covers you for the type of damage you have suffered, and request a claim form.

3. Explain the extent of the damage and your circumstances, but do not undertake any repairs, or buy replacement goods, without your insurer's express authorisation.

4. If your property is likely to suffer further damage if immediate or temporary repairs are not undertaken quickly, then ask your insurer if you may be allowed to have some repairs done as a matter of urgency, and get this confirmed in writing.

5. Do not be afraid to "chase" your claim - insurance companies will be trying to do their best to look after their policyholders but are likely to be inundated with thousands of claims, so you may need to be active in getting the matter sorted out.

6. Do not be disconcerted if your insurer appoints a loss adjuster. It is not unusual for insurers to do so where the claim is for a substantial sum - a loss adjuster is an independent professional, who, although hired by the insurance company, has to make a fair evaluation of the damage or loss.

7. Unfortunately there may be unscrupulous traders who prey on those who need immediate help. Your insurance company may help you find a reputable tradesperson but, if you need to find someone yourself, take a few sensible precautions. Seek a detailed quotation in writing and try to use a firm with recommendations for reliability and good workmanship - a trade association might get help. Get a written contract containing important details like start and completion dates. Find out whether a worthwhile guarantee is available and avoid making large deposits or advance payments.

8. Making a false claim constitutes fraud and may invalidate any genuine claims under the policy.

9. For those who have been lucky enough to avoid the havoc wreaked by the weather, why not take this opportunity to check there are no inadequacies in your cover - just in case?
