Former Goole boss John Reed starts his role as assistant manager at Harrogate Town tomorrow, with the UniBond League hierarchy believing he can form a successful double-act with boss Mick Hennigan.

As reported by the Evening Press, Reed left the Northern Counties East League club after their 3-1 defeat by Glapwell on Saturday, having been approached by Town to become Hennigan's number two.

Town have since confirmed the move, with director of football Graham Shepherd saying the new man starts this weekend, beginning with a tough trip to Stocksbridge PS, currently riding high in division one of the UniBond League.

Town, meanwhile, are third bottom and on Tuesday were knocked out of the FA Umbro Trophy after their first round replay at Witton Albion. Reed had travelled with the squad to watch that game, seeing at first hand how they threw away an early 2-0 advantage to lose 3-2.

However, Shepherd was confident the Reed's input - together with that of Hennigan, who took over as manager in mid-September after a disastrous start to the season - would see progress made up the table.

He said: "John Reed has a vast knowledge of non-League football, having been in the game at a good level for many years. He's got a lot of experience and has a very big appetite for the game.

"He knows a lot of people and does the job with a smile on his face. His coming to the club should be good for everybody concerned, and he will form a good management partnership with Mick."

Goole, meanwhile, were not expecting to name a new manager before tomorrow's Northern Counties East League premier division clash with Brodsworth MW.

Elsewhere in the division, Selby Town visit Staveley MW, while struggling Harrogate Railway entertain mid-table Thackley, both games being weather permitting.
